Working Together to Save Live's

Businesses are now safer from fire, thanks to the support and advice they received from Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service at a recent workshop organised by the North Shields Chamber of Trade and Commerce.

Representatives from over 30 businesses based in the town listened to Watch Manager  Richard Hill who outlined the steps they could take to protect their employees and customers from fire and discussed the  legal requirements of the Fire Safety Order.

Commenting after the event Richard said: “It has been fantastic to work in partnership with the North Shields Chamber of Trade and Commerce to deliver fire safety advice in the town.  Statistically, eight out of ten businesses which suffer a major incident, such as fire, never re-open or close within 18 months of the incident.  When the Fire Safety Order was introduced, it replaced over 70 different pieces of legislation to make it clearer and simpler for businesses to stay safer from fire.  Today is all about advising businesses how they can help to protect their  employees and customers from fire.  We would much rather work with them to educate them about the changes in legislation and to let them know we are here to advise and support them as much as we can.  I would like to thank the many businesses who came along to the workshop and many of them are keen to introduce a number of safety measures to make their premises as safe from fire as possible.”

North Shield’s Chamber of Trade and Commerce Chair David Bavaird stated ‘ The presentation from the Fire and Rescue Service was both interesting and informative and will help improve fire safety in the town for businesses, residents and visitors and we look forward to working with the Service in the future. “
